The CDC 7600 was next. It was IBM that drove home the nail with the watershed Roadrunner super, which was sold, significantly, to Cray’s very first customer – Los Alamos National Laboratory.Cray died following injuries sustained in a car crash in 1997, but he remains one of the most influential figures of 20th and 21st century computing. Release of the CDC 6600, which was considered the world’s first actual supercomputer, followed in 1963.
That machine would later become the UNIVAC 1101, after ERA was purchased by the Remington Rand Corporation.Seymour’s first job at ERA was designing the successor to the 1101. It became more cost effective to throw racks of commodity computers at the kinds of problems supercomputers had been built to solve, and demand for his big machines waned.
Integrated circuits replaced transistors, and the Cray-1 delivered 170 megaflops of processing speed.In the years following CDC's founding, Seymour relinquished the company's management reins to devote more time to computer development. *SGI HQ is now the home of The Computer History MuseumOK their web page lists some history — SGI bought cray, spun off Cray, bought by Tera, who renamed themselves Cray…so sorta kinda the same company, but with a significant ownership “bobble” in the 90’s 00’s.To complicate matters, there were really two Crays.

Buying a Cray became like buying IBM elsewhere: it wouldn't get you fired.It wasn’t until the 1990s and 2000s that rivals began loosening Cray's grip. It did not seem that there would be any way for them to afford to develop a new computer, given that the now-large CDC had been unable to support more than one. With newer, faster silicon transistors, the CDC 6600, an order of magnitude faster than any other machine on the market, debuted in 1964. He ranks up there with Edison and Bell of creating an industry.
