If the dies were prepared with a special surface, then we would expect to see a sharp cut-off between special surface coins and normal coins. This included several 1964 Lincoln cents, Roosevelt Dimes, Washington Quarters and Kennedy Half Dollars all bearing the Special Strike surfaces. It's possible, but I have never heard of it happening. Were these '64 SMS nickels put into general circulation by the Mint or were they put in proof sets? NGC ultimately graded each of the coins. 5:02.
